Mercedes S Class led the world in car safety tech from ABS to ESP and even the first adaptive cruise control.

Mercedes was the first to launch Bosch’s computer-controlled multi-channel ABS in the 1978 Mercedes S Class W116, followed by SRS airbags with pyrotechnic belt pretensioners in the 1981 S Class W126. The same W126 later debuted ASR traction control in 1985, while the W140 introduced ESC/ESP in 1995 and BAS emergency brake assist in 1996. It also covers early diesel milestones, from the first passenger-car diesel in 1936 to the first turbo diesel in the 1978 Mercedes 300 SD.
These breakthroughs show how consistently Mercedes pushed production-car technology before brands like BMW, Toyota, Jaguar and Peugeot followed.

From radar-based Distronic adaptive cruise control in the 1999 S Class W220 to Keyless Go in 1998, Mercedes repeatedly set industry firsts that shaped modern vehicle safety and convenience. This Short walks through those innovations and why the S Class has long been the benchmark for automotive tech leadership.

If you enjoy engineering breakthroughs and real car tech history, stick around for more.
