BMW in the early 1960s: close to failure

At the end of the 1950s, BMW was in serious trouble. The company was losing money, selling too few cars, and surviving mainly on small bubble cars like the Isetta, which were cheap but not profitable. BMW was so weak that Mercedes-Benz nearly bought the company, which would have ended BMW as an independent brand.


The 1960s Neue Klasse: saving BMW from bankruptcy

BMW’s rescue came with the Neue Klasse, starting with cars like the BMW 1500 and 1800.

These cars were:
Practical family sedans
Sporty and fun to drive
Modern and well engineered

They sold very well, brought in real profits, and gave BMW a clear identity:
sporty, high-quality cars for everyday use.

Because of the Neue Klasse, BMW:
Became profitable again
Stayed independent
