The FIRST EVER Mercedes-AMG GT SUV! — Full First Look

Welcome back to RBR! And to the all-new #MercedesAMG GT SUV is here! And I think the design is finally getting to where we need it to be. This is a much improved car in it’s look, all thanks to the new design team now heading both Mercedes Benz and AMG. Looking more like an ICE car, and less awkward than the GT 4 door sibling — I think it’s a big step in the right direction!

Today is a First Look at the new #AMGGT SUV, the second member of AMG's AMG.EA family. And with three different versions, GT 53, GT 55 and GT 63, AMG is taking the fight directly to the new Porsche Cayenne Electric. It also exists as an alternative to the pure V8 power also available as new cars at AMG, with the GLE 63S and the GLS 63.

Underneath, the flagship AMG GT 63 SUV retains the three extraordinary axial-flux motors, delivering 1,169 PS and 2,000 Nm! That's enough for 0–100 km/h in just 2.5 seconds, and 0–200 km/h in an incredible 6.8 seconds! The GT 55 offers 816 PS, while the more affordable GT 53 uses conventional electric motors with a two-speed rear gearbox, producing 544 PS.

This time, there are two battery options, 106 kWh and 128 kWh, with the larger one offering, up to 710 kW charging, and a maximum WLTP range of 700 km. Then there's the new AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL+ suspension, with pitch and roll stabilisation as now AMG’s best suspension offered so far.

The biggest question is whether an electric AMG can deliver the emotion of a proper AMG engine — in my experience of driving the 4 door it can, thanks to AMGFORCE Sport+. This uses recordings of the legendary AMG GT R. It recreates V8 sounds, simulated gear changes, paddle shifting and even physical vibrations through the seats. Crucially, it makes the electric experience essentially indistinguishable from the ICE experience.

Inside, we also have a completely new AMG cockpit, MB.OS infotainment and the fascinating AMG RACE ENGINEER controls, allowing drivers to fine-tune the car's response, agility and traction. And finally, we'll explore the SUV's practicality, rear seats, and boot etc!
