Mercedes said Vision EQXX was a development car and the inspiration for future EVs. At the heart of the EQXX is a 100-kilowatt/hour battery. It’s a modified lithium-ion unit with a higher silicon content, which gives it much better power density. This means it is half the size and 30 per cent lighter than the battery pack used in EQS. At just 465-kilograms it is very light. The similarly-sized battery in the Porsche Taycan weighs 630-kg. The weight saving continues in every area. It runs from the use of lightweight carbon-fibre and the largest aluminum casting ever produced by M-B to the magnesium wheels and aluminum-alloy brake rotors. It’s a case of light really does make better range — the EQXX weighs just 1,750-kg, which is 321-kg lighter than the rear-drive Taycan. The battery’s size reduction was important, because it had to fit within the EQXX’s short-ish 2,800-mm wheelbase.
