Most of the 30 plus-year-old fuel tank level sending units need to be removed for a good service. I have found that 8 out of 10 can be repaired with a good service and cleaning. My kit includes everything you need to do it yourself: https://mercedessource.com/store/fuel-tank-level-sending-unit-service-kit-w-instructions But please keep in mind that some are just NOT repairable.
