Measuring the oil level for the 5G-Tronic (722.6) automatic transmission is a specific procedure because these transmissions do not have a permanent dipstick from the factory. A special service dipstick is used; it is inserted only for the measurement and then removed.
????️ Requirements and Tools
Special Service Dipstick (e.g., with OEM part number 140 589 15 21 00 or equivalent). The dipstick for the 722.6 is typically 1220 mm long.
Transmission Oil Temperature Measurement. This is critical for an accurate reading. The best way is with a diagnostic tool (to read the temperature from the internal sensor) or with an infrared thermometer aimed at the transmission oil pan.
Level Position for the vehicle (on a lift or over a pit/channel).
Engine running at idle.
Gear selector in "P" (Park) position.
???? Measurement Procedure
Preparation: Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface, with the engine running at idle.
Warm-up: Allow the transmission to reach its operating temperature. There are two main zones on the dipstick:
"COLD" / 25°C – Used after initial filling, before full warm-up.
"HOT" / 80°C (or 70-80°C) – This is the recommended temperature for an accurate reading.
Remove the Cap: Locate the filler tube (usually in the engine bay). The cap is secured with a plastic locking pin (the tamper-proof plate). This pin must be broken/removed with a suitable tool.
Insert the Dipstick: Insert the service dipstick into the filler tube until it bottoms out in the pan. Note: Since the filler tubes vary in length between models, a portion of the dipstick may stick out—this is normal .
Reading: Remove the dipstick, wipe it clean, reinsert it, and remove it again to check the level.
The fluid level should be between the minimum and maximum marks for the corresponding temperature (e.g., in the 80°C zone if the oil is hot).
Correction and Re-measure: If the level is low, add small amounts (e.g., 100-200 ml) and repeat the measurement. Caution: Overfilling is just as dangerous as low fluid.
Sealing: Once the measurement is complete, remove the dipstick and install a new plastic locking clip (pin) to seal the filler tube cap. The dipstick is NOT left in the transmission.
Key Takeaways:
The level is measured with the engine RUNNING and at the correct temperature.
Always use a special service dipstick of the correct length (1220 mm).
