After five consecutive podiums for Hamilton, the team was hopeful that Lewis and George could do an even better job in the second half of the season. There were many reasons for optimism coming into Spa as Mercedes finally seemed to have closed the gap with Ferrari and Red Bull. But as we have seen, instead of keeping that gap closed, it widened.

The Friday practice sessions already showed a massive gap between Mercedes and mainly Red Bull, but that was nothing compared to the 1.8 second deficit to Verstappen in Q3 of qualifying. After qualifying Toto Wolff said:”This was our worst qualifying in over ten years. It shouldn’t be that three weeks ago we start from pole position and then in the next race we are so far behind. Red Bull is clearly on another level. I don’t know what it is, but it doesn’t make me comfortable”.

After the race George Russell was both confused and disappointed. In an interview with Skysports he said:”I have a bit of mixed emotions. If you told me yesterday that I would only be two seconds away from a podium on Sunday, than I would have sad that it would have been a good come back. I did have the feeling that I could secure that podium place, but I had two bad laps, and I had to manage the tires after that”.
