The Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR was developed in late 1996 by Mercedes-Benz and AMG to compete in the newly formed FIA GT1 Championship. Built in an extraordinarily tight window of just 128 days, the project aimed to dethrone dominant competitors like McLaren and Porsche. While the car adopted the front grille, headlights, and taillights from the standard C208 CLK road car for brand alignment, its underpinnings were entirely bespoke, centered around a rigid carbon-fiber and aluminum honeycomb monocoque chassis.
To meet FIA GT1 homologation rules requiring at least 25 road-going examples, AMG engineered the *Straßenversion* (Street Version). In road trim, the race engine was bored out to a mid-mounted 6.9-liter naturally aspirated V12 producing 612 horsepower and 572 lb-ft of torque. Paired with a 6-speed sequential manual transmission operated via steering-wheel paddle shifters, the car accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in 3.6 seconds and reached a top speed exceeding 200 mph.
Only 28 road-legal units were completed by AMG and HWA between 1998 and 2006, including two prototypes, 20 coupes, and six roofless roadsters. Despite a few concessions to usability such as leather upholstery, basic air conditioning, and dual glove boxes, the cabin remained loud, cramped, and race-focused, securing the CLK GTR's legacy as one of the most uncompromising, pure-bred homologation supercars ever built.
