During the Industry Pool at the Nürburgring I have filmed this Mercedes SLS E-Cell, which was introduced five years ago at the 2012 Paris Motor Show, driving around. Less that 100 cars are made from the E-Cell, making it already a rare sighting. As you can see Mercedes is testing more with the car, with all kind of equipment attached. But what are they testing??

Decked out in an almost comical amount of equipment, the mysterious model has us scratching our heads as we're not entirely sure what's going on. One possibility is that Mercedes is working on an electric version of the AMG GT and the company decided to use an old SLS AMG Electric Drive as a mule.

Mercedes' high-performance division, AMG, has already committed to electrifiation with the AMG GT 'coupaloon', a four-door sports coupe with EQ Power+ boosting the 4.0-litre petrol V8 with hybrid electric power.

Could it also be preparing an all-electric successor to the electric SLS? Despite this sighting of this SLS E-Cell, no electric GT is on the cards.

The only reason they pulled out the eDrive was to fuse the high-performance electric drivetain and the latest sensors/cameras for autonomous driving. And also for teaching a good driver an even faster line on tracks like the Ring.

Sounds like they're using an old test hack to hone very modern self-driving systems.
