W124 AMG Hammer — 300 km/h

In the mid-1980s, AMG wasn't yet part of Mercedes-Benz. It was an independent engineering team from Affalterbach, where cars were designed for performance. It was then that the AMG Hammer, based on the W124, was born—a sedan that changed perceptions of the capabilities of a four-door Mercedes.

This particular car holds a special place in history. Hartmut Feyhl served as the project's technical director, and he was responsible for the car's comprehensive refinement to achieve a top speed of approximately 300 km/h.

Why 300 km/h was possible

At speeds above 270–280 km/h, aerodynamics, not power, becomes the decisive factor. Hartmut Feyhl understood this perfectly, so this Hammer featured engineering solutions that were unconventional for the time.

A key feature was the modified front grille. Unlike the standard W124, it could be closed at high speed, restricting airflow into the engine compartment. This reduced drag, reduced turbulence, and eliminated excess pressure under the hood.

It's important to emphasize: this was a targeted engineering solution, implemented specifically to achieve top speed, and not a production system or a comfort feature. Airflow management ideas had existed before in automotive history, but in this case, it was purely a matter of aerodynamics.

Powertrain and an Integrated Approach

The car was equipped with a 6.0-liter AMG V8 with four-valve heads (32V), hand-assembled and designed for stable operation under sustained high loads. However, the engine alone wouldn't have provided a top speed of 300 km/h. The decisive factor was the integrated approach: aerodynamics, cooling, chassis settings, and the car's overall stability at top speeds.

Why this Hammer is special

This isn't just another AMG Hammer. This is an engineering experiment, with Hartmut Feyhl serving as the architect of the entire concept. Every detail was dedicated to a single goal: achieving maximum speed. That's why this W124 AMG Hammer has gone down in history as the car that made the 300 km/h mark ceased to be a theory and became an engineering reality.
