2025 Mercedes-AMG E53
Price: $89.150–$93.300
Overview
After briefly going MIA, the Mercedes-AMG E53 sedan returns for 2025 with a potent plug-in hybrid powertrain. The system pairs a turbocharged six-cylinder engine with an electric motor that produces up to 604 horsepower. While the sports sedan's interior and exterior styling remain rooted in the timeless E-class aesthetic, AMG adds customary touches. The plug-in hybrid has an EPA-estimated all-electric driving range of 42 miles, and its 21.2-kWh battery can go from 10 to 80 percent charge in about 20 minutes using a DC fast-charger. Compared with the not-as-sporty Benz models, the E53 has an AMG-tuned all-wheel-drive system and adaptive suspension. For 2025, the E53 sedan is flying solo, as the coupe and convertible are not scheduled to return to the fold.
Engine, Transmission, and Performance
The gasoline element of the powertrain is a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six-cylinder engine rated for 433 horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque. The electric motor produces 161 hp and 354 pound-feet of torque; combined output is a hearty 577 hp and 553 pound-feet; toggling the Race Start mode ramps up output to 604 horsepower. A nine-speed automatic transmission sends power to all four wheels, and standard rear-wheel steering aids both high-speed agility and low-speed maneuvering in tight situations. Drive modes include Electric, which runs the car as an EV until the battery depletes, and Battery Hold, which will maintain the charge level for later deployment. When we drove the E53, we found it to offer an interesting split personality with big power, capable handling, and a noticeable difference in personality between the various driving modes. It's not quite as extreme as we'd hope from an AMG sports sedan, but perhaps that's where the eventual E63 model will come in.
Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
The E53 follows the lead of the rest of the E-class lineup, blending quality materials with precise assembly. Standard touches include an AMG performance steering wheel wrapped in nappa leather, power-adjustable front AMG sport seats with AMG callouts and red stitching, and, exclusive to the E53, grey-hued open-pore ash wood trim with an illuminated AMG logo. More aggressively bolstered AMG Performance seats are available.
