Mercedes W210 E-Class 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002 5G-Tronic (722.6) Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) Change
Changing the fluid in the 5G-Tronic automatic transmission (internal code 722.6) on a Mercedes W210 is a critical maintenance procedure. The manufacturer generally recommends a fluid and filter change every 50,000 to 60,000 km (30,000 to 40,000 miles).
The 722.6 transmission often includes a drain plug on the torque converter, which allows for a near-complete oil change. If this plug is absent, you may perform a partial change (draining only the pan) or a full flush using a specialized machine.
General Procedure (Full Change)
Warm-up: Run the engine briefly (5-10 minutes) to slightly warm the old fluid.
Drain Fluid from the Pan:
Place the car on a lift or jack stands over a drain pan.
Remove the transmission pan drain plug and allow the fluid to drain completely.
Drain Fluid from the Torque Converter (If Equipped):
Rotate the crankshaft (via the crankshaft bolt) until the torque converter drain plug is accessible.
Remove the plug and drain the remaining fluid. This step is crucial for a complete fluid change.
Remove Pan and Replace Filter:
Remove the pan bolts.
Carefully remove the transmission pan and the old filter.
Clean the pan and the magnets thoroughly.
Install the new filter.
Replace Pilot Bushing (Connector):
If necessary, replace the electrical connector to prevent future leaks.
Reassembly:
Install the new pan gasket and bolt the transmission pan back into place. Tighten the bolts to the correct torque specification.
Reinstall the drain plugs (on the pan and torque converter) with new sealing washers.
Refill with New Fluid:
Pour the required amount of new ATF through the dipstick tube.
Check Fluid Level:
Start the engine and shift the selector lever through all positions (P, R, N, D, 4, 3, 2, 1), pausing for a few seconds in each, to circulate the fluid.
The fluid level must be checked with the engine running and the transmission at a specific operating temperature (usually 80^\circ\text{C} or 176^\circ\text{F}). Add fluid as needed using the service dipstick tool until the correct level is reached.
Important: Correct level measurement and the use of 236.14 specification fluid are vital for the longevity of the 5G-Tronic. It is highly recommended that this procedure be performed in a service shop with the correct tools for temperature monitoring.
