The 722.9 7G Mechatronic VGS TCM conductor plate is a transmission computer module that controls the transmission and mounts directly to the valve body of the transmission.

On this particular unit there are multiple sensors that are cylindrical in shape and connected via a very thin ribbon cable that runs along the entire housing of this TCM.

There are 3 different versions of this. VGS 1, 2, and 3. Each one might look very similar but will have different software. You can determine what version your vehicle has by the stamped information on the unit itself.

What Vehicles Have a 722.9?
The 722.9 VGS TCM conductor plate can be found on many models of Mercedes-Benz. Here are the various models that have this TCM:

Mercedes C-Class
2011–2018 Mercedes-Benz W204 (C63 AMG, C63 AMG Black Series)
2014 Mercedes-Benz W205 (C180)
Mercedes E-Class
2009–2016 Mercedes-Benz W212 (E200AMG 7G-Tronic,E63AMG)
2009–2013 Mercedes-Benz W212 (E200AMG 7G-Tronic)
Mercedes S-Class
2013–2017 Mercedes-Benz W222 (all models except Maybach S 500 and Maybach S 500 4MATIC)
2017–2020 Mercedes-Benz W222 (V12 models only)
Mercedes SLK-Class
2011–2015 Mercedes-Benz R172
Mercedes CLK-Class
2005–2010 Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class (C209) (post facelift)

What Does It Do?
This computer has 4 speed sensors integrated into the unit to monitor and control specific functions. These respectively control the ‘Turbine, Internal, Output, and Selection Range Sensor’.
Each speed sensor will display a specific set of trouble codes and will allow you to determine which sensors are faulty.

The unique design of this TCM can be attributed to the way it mounts to the valve body. As you can see on this unit, there are deliberate circular gaps along the outer edges for the valve body solenoids.

Symptoms of a failing TCM:
If one of these sensors is not working right your vehicle may experience:
Gears shifting intermittently
Stuck in a particular gear
Vehicle goes into limp mode
Not able to select any gears manually

How to Diagnose a Faulty TCM:
If you have any of the symptoms mentioned and have access to a good OBDII scan tool that can communicate with the TCM, scan the transmission control module specifically to see what codes show up.

If your scan tool shows any of these codes displayed on the screen, then this could indicate that your TCM unit needs to be rebuilt:

The signal from component Y3/8N1 Turbine Speed Sensor is not available or defective
The signal from component Y3/8N2 Internal Speed Sensor is not available or defective
The signal from component Y3/8N3 Output Speed Sensor is not available or defective
The signal from component Y3/8S1 Selection Range Sensor is not available or defective

What To Do:
Visit UpFix.com and find the service repair page for your particular unit. If the codes and issues match what you’re currently experiencing on your vehicle, send it in for repair.

TCMs can be expensive to replace and re-program. Here at UpFix we have a better solution - Send in your original unit for repairs.
A used one can have similar problems and will need to be programmed anyways. A new one will cost much more and there can be a backorder which means months of delays.
However by having your original unit refurbished, you can be assured that it will be plug-n-play without the need for any additional programming.
If you’re uncertain on how to remove the TCM you can either have a mechanic in your area remove it or find a tutorial online on the removal process.
It’s important to note that you only need to send in the TCM (conductor plate). Please remove it from the valve body itself as the valve body is much larger and heavier to ship and is not needed for repairs.

Don’t replace your failing automotive electronics - UpFix it!
