Ever wondered how Mercedes-Benz manages power to all four wheels? In today’s video, I'm doing a complete, deep-dive teardown of the Mercedes 4MATIC AWD system to see exactly what’s inside and how the engineering holds up over time (or not, in this case!)
The 4MATIC system is world-renowned for its traction and stability, but it’s often a "black box" to owners and enthusiasts alike. I'm cracking open the 7G-TRONIC (722.9) transmission and AWD transfer case to inspect the planetary gears, clutch packs, and internal shafts that make this All-Wheel Drive system tick, and why this particular unit failed!
The transmission in this video was from a 2009 W212 Mercedes C300 with the 7 speed automatic transmission.
Covered in this video:
Full Disassembly: Taking apart the 4MATIC AWD unit piece by piece.
Internal Components: A close-up look at the gears, bearings, and seals inside the 7 speed automatic transmission and its condition after more than a decade of abuse.
The Logic: Explaining the mechanical torque split and how it interacts with the vehicle's electronics and dynamics.
Wear & Tear: Identifying common failure points to look out for in high-mileage Mercedes models (hint, don't do burnouts like in this example).
Whether you are a DIY mechanic, a Mercedes owner, or just an engineering nerd like me who loves seeing how complex machines work, this autopsy of a "luxury" AWD system is for you.
Chapters:
0:00 Intro to Mercedes 4MATIC and 7G TRONIC
0:39 Removing the Transfer case
3:28 Understanding the torque split & clutch pack
6:49 Transmission Teardown
8:47 Clutch pack and planetary gears
14:01 Valve body & TCU
16:00 Conclusion - What makes 4MATIC unique?
