Max Verstappen has officially set the fastest lap in Formula 1 history — and couldn’t resist cracking a joke about it.

At the 2025 Italian Grand Prix in Monza, Verstappen stormed to pole position with a lap time of 1:18.792, beating the McLarens of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. His record-breaking run averaged 264.682 km/h (164.47 mph), making it the quickest lap ever recorded in F1’s 75-year history by average speed.

The Dutchman edged out Lewis Hamilton’s 2020 record in the Mercedes W11 by just under a tenth of a second. Reflecting on the feat, Verstappen credited the new asphalt and kerbs at Monza — but also joked:
“I think you’d go even faster if you put the 2020 Mercedes here, especially if you put me in the car!”

???? Do you think Verstappen could have gone even quicker in Hamilton’s legendary W11? Let us know in the comments!
