►Your Mercedes W205 4Matic differentials, front and rear, consist of a handful of intermeshing gears that convert the engine's power into forward or rearward wheel rotation. Inside is a specialized oil formulated to keep everything cool and lubricated, which, like any other drivetrain oil, will need replacement.
Differential gear fluid is relatively maintenance-free, with a service interval typically between 40,000 and 60,000 miles. Within that range, its protective molecules break down, causing the oil to lose effectiveness. Failure to service the differential within Mercedes' specified interval will cause excessive wear to the parts within. Differential replacements are a costly business, far more expensive than a lifetime of differential oil changes.
